"Will you take this?" is the second-most-common question we get (after "how much?"). Most homeowners are surprised by how broadly we say yes — and equally surprised by the few specific things we won't touch. This guide is the comprehensive list of what Triangle junk removal companies will and won't take, organized so you can quickly check before you book.
The Short Answer
If it's not hazardous waste, live ammunition, or asbestos, we take it. That covers about 98% of the items in a typical home. Here's the detail.
What We Take: Furniture (Yes, All of It)
- Sofas, sectionals, loveseats, recliners — any condition, torn or stained is fine
- Beds, mattresses, box springs, bed frames — all sizes, all materials (foam, innerspring, latex, hybrid)
- Dressers, chests of drawers, nightstands, armoires — wood, MDF, particle board, anything
- Dining tables, chairs, bar stools — any size or style
- Desks, office chairs, filing cabinets — single pieces or full office sets
- Bookshelves, entertainment centers, cabinets
- Patio furniture, outdoor sectionals, hammocks, fire pits

What We Take: Appliances (Including Refrigerators)
- Refrigerators, freezers, mini fridges — EPA-certified refrigerant recovery included at no extra cost

- Garbage disposals, vent hoods — usually paired with a kitchen remodel
- Commercial appliances — restaurant-grade ovens, walk-in fridges, ice machines (custom-quoted)

- Grass clippings, yard waste, mulch
- Christmas trees (post-holiday)
- Trampolines, swing sets, playsets — we dismantle on-site

- Drywall, lumber, plywood, OSB
- Flooring: hardwood, laminate, tile, vinyl, carpet, padding
- Cabinets, countertops (laminate, butcher block, even granite)
- Doors, windows, trim, baseboards

What We DON'T Take (And Where to Take Them)
The short list of items we can't legally or safely transport:
Hazardous Household Materials
- Wet paint (oil-based or latex) — Wake County Household Hazardous Waste facility (free for residents)
- Paint thinner, solvents, gasoline — same HHW facility
- Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers — HHW facility
- Motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid — auto-parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly's) often take used motor oil for free
- Propane tanks — refilling locations (gas stations, U-Haul) take old tanks for exchange
- Pool chemicals (chlorine tabs, shock) — HHW facility
- Mercury-containing items: old thermometers, fluorescent bulbs — HHW facility or specialty recyclers
Specialty Hazards
- Asbestos-containing materials — NC law requires licensed abatement contractors. We'll refer one.
- Lead paint debris — similar — licensed remediation contractors only
- Live ammunition, firearms — coordinate with local police for safe disposal
- Radioactive materials (smoke detectors are OK in normal disposal; industrial sources are not)
- Biohazard / crime scene cleanup — specialty vendors only
Items With Specific Recycling Streams
- Used tires — NC has a tire fee that funds recycling; tire shops take old tires for $3–$5 each
- Car batteries — auto-parts stores and battery retailers take them for core credit
- Lithium-ion batteries (loose) — battery recyclers (Batteries Plus, Best Buy take small quantities)
- Medications (prescription drugs) — pharmacy take-back programs (CVS, Walgreens)
The Gray-Area Items: We Take These With Notes
- Old gas grills: Yes, but remove the propane tank first (or we leave it for you to take to an exchange).
- Lawnmowers and gas tools: Yes, but drain the gas first or let us empty the tank on-site (additional time).
- Pool chemicals stored in a shed: Yes to the shed; you take the chemicals to HHW.
- Old fridge full of food: Yes — food gets bagged and goes to disposal with the fridge.
- Vehicles (cars, trucks, ATVs): We can take inoperable vehicles with title transfer, but it's a custom quote.
- Bedbug mattresses: Yes — tell us at booking so we wrap and route to disposal (not recycling).
- Mold-damaged items: Yes for light contamination, no for significant mold (refer to specialty remediation).
Why The "No" List Is So Short
Most haulers have similar "no" lists because the items we exclude are all governed by federal, state, or local regulations:
- EPA rules govern hazardous waste — we'd need hazmat licensing to transport.
- NC environmental law requires licensed abatement for asbestos and lead.
- Insurance restrictions prevent us from transporting ammunition, firearms, and certain biohazards.
- Disposal facility rules reject specific items (e.g., refrigerators must have refrigerant recovered first — we handle that).
For everything else, our answer is "yes, send a photo and we'll quote it."
The "Will You Take This?" Quick-Check
Before you book, mentally run through this checklist:
- Is it hazardous (wet paint, chemicals, propane, asbestos)? No — HHW facility.
- Is it live ammunition or firearm? No — coordinate with police.
- Everything else? Yes, with the gray-area notes above. Send photos and we'll quote.
